Make Dietary Change An Environmental Priority – An Open Letter To Al Gore

April 4, 2009

Dear Mr. Gore,

The world has appropriately recognized and acknowledged you for your environmental crusade in bringing awareness to the dangers of excessive Carbon Dioxide Emissions and the tasks that lie before us to restrain our activities in order to prevent disastrous climate changes resulting from Global Warming.

In light of newer evidence and information on the impact of excessive meat eating on the environment such as those reported by Kathy Freston of the Huffington Post in her article of April 1, 2009 entitled, “The Breathtaking Effects Of Cutting Back On Meat”  I would like to offer the following suggestion, if you agree: that you make Dietary Change, in terms of reducing the intake of livestock animals foods, the number priority for all of us to do in all future presentations conducted by yourself and by those you have mentored.   I also suggest that this change in priorities be reflected on your website in the section, “What You Can Do“, moving it from the last item on page 4 to the first item on page 1, (before the item of switching to a compact flourescent light bulb).   You may also wish to move the suggestion of buying local and organic also to page 1. I believe that with your influence and the subsequent effect that such a dietary change would have, we may be able to achieve emission reduction goals much faster than predicted.

Recommending a reduction in livestock animal food consumption along with an increase in whole grains and vegetables will not only benefit the environment but will help eliminate world hunger, as pointed out by Frances Moore Lappe in her book, “Diet For A Small Planet“, and will also help reduce many of the major health issues including heart disease, cancer and Type II Diabetes that plague the world today as reported recently in the news and as promoted by macrobiotic educators for many years in such books as Michio Kushi’s “Macrobiotic Path To Total Health.

Thank you for your consideration,

Phiya Kushi
