The Serenity Prayer

I had another significant revelation when I woke up this morning.

I recently learned a prayer that some may be familiar with called “The Serenity Prayer“:

God, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
The courage to change the things I can;
And the wisdom to know the difference.

It may seem strange to some to find out that, after 50 years, I haven’t been aware of this and many other simple prayers.  It is another unique trait of mine.  Like never eaten any red meat or never been hospitalized, I have never been to any religious sermons or gatherings ( excluding funerals) in my entire life.  Not that I think religion is dangerous to your health (and red meat isn’t really bad either, depending on quality and quantity) but that has just been my life, so far.

The Serenity Prayer is normally associated with Alcoholics Anonymous and other similar groups.  They accept that they cannot change the power of alcohol over their lives but they can choose to abstain from it and, in times of craving it, seek the wisdom to know when to abstain.  This is one meaning.

My revelation involves another meaning of the Serenity Prayer on a subject that has been a part of my life ever since I was born, namely, macrobiotics.  In a larger sense, macrobiotics is the study of destiny and what we can do to change it and what we can’t.  It is about finding balance and, as the prayer states, the wisdom to know the difference between when we can change our destiny and when we can’t.

Earlier, I wrote a series of posts concerning the subject of Destiny which can be found here:

1.  Exploring Destiny (part 1): An Introduction To Palmistry

2. Exploring Destiny (part 2): The Fate Of Sanpaku 1

3. Exploring Destiny (part 2): The Fate Of Sanpaku 2

4. Exploring Destiny (part 3): There are no accidents…or are there?

It has been my intention to write one last post in this series that explores the nature of the universe and to look at how much of our lives is really “pre-determined” versus how much is free will.  Based on my macrobiotic studies, I believe that we can exercise free will over only a very small portion of our lives.  The small portion that we do have control over can give us an over inflated sense that we can change anything. Our arrogance is our failure to recognize and accept and adapt to the things that we can’t change. Our ignorance is our failure to recognize and act upon the things that we can change.  Many people, for example, are ignorant of the influence that diet has on one’s health while many others are arrogant by failing to recognize when diet can’t help. There are many other examples. The Serenity Prayer can be applied to every domain in our lives.  In the end, we are all on a life-long journey to acquire the wisdom to know the difference between the two.

    When i was taking the three years macrobiotic course i thought about control (i was a controller on myself and others, although i denied) and i came to the conclusion that may be, may be,we only can choose what we eat.

    Phiya makes me very sad if you drink alcohol, and you don’t want to drink. Drink some hot apple juice instead, and look for a girlfriend. Focus in one. Best Wishes. Your friend Marta.

    Hello,

    So many interesting topics are touched in this article: prayer, destiny, free will, wisdom, ignorance, arrogance, balance,….The following it is my personal opinion about some of them.

    Prayer is a healing tool that enlightens the path to follow, connects directly to our Heart,…

    Ignorance is a condition that can guide to arrogance which is a condition too, one of the ways to change the polarity here is to achieve humility that can be gotten through studying, listening, being quiet, just being and living the now…, to acquire knowledge, make the most of us understand that we know nothing and that we are just a little piece of an enormous puzzle, this give us humility but, at the same time, we are conscious that the beauty of looking at it in this way, make us see that even being so little, we are necessary to complete the puzzle.

    For some people, their life experience, it is enough to achieve humility, others may need other people´s life experience as a part of their own to get there, others may need something else or may not be able to experience it at all, …all of us have different paths, different life´s experiences, different lessons to learn, different tests, and all these differences help when are assimilated with respect and tolerance, to accept that everyone of us walk a path that won´t be walked by nobody else and this is a responsibility towards the rest of the Universe, but inside of all this, we are gifted with infinite opportunities to learn the lesson, to pass the test, to repeat or to pass, …with beings that will be around once and again to share their unconditional infinite love, respect, compasion, mercy, patience, humbleness, support, to help us to achieve our dreams/goals/mission.

    Our consciousness is a sparkle inside of an Universe of Light, knowing this it is easy to understand that our free will is limited, but exists and we are responsible of the decisions taken in our conscious life.

    Wisdom is born in the silence of the nothing, when we know that we know nothing, when we feel so little like the most insignificant expression of energy, at this moment, the highest expression of contraction gives birth to the highest expression of expansion and begins to germinate the seed of wisdom in our Heart.

    Wise people don´t talk much but even when they think, the Universe listens, …huge responsibility.

    We, normal people, in the journey to learn to differentiate between what we can change and what we can´t change, we fall many times but we get up as many times as we fall, and we learn to accept and to recognize with every falling the differences between both of them, with it we grow up in humility and wisdom.

    To get to know ourselves, who we are, at least the best we can at every now, help us too, …Specially knowing our weaknesses that are the manifested polarity of our slept fortitudes.

    Phiya, you have all my unconditional respect and my gratitude for sharing with us in such an open way, your unique life experience and the lessons you have learnt until now from it.

    Hello, I would like to share with you this prayer (Peace prayer), I hope you don´t mind:

    Lord, make me a channel of thy peace. That where there is hatred I may bring love, That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness, That where there is discord, I may bring harmony,That where there is error I may bring truth, That where there is doubt I may bring faith, That where there is despair I may bring hope, That where there are shadows I may bring light, That where there is sadness I may bring joy. Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted, To understand than to be understood, To love than to be loved. For it is by forgetting self that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven, it is by dying that one awakens to eternal life. Amen
