Liona Boyd, Andrew Cohen and me

Today, I had the chance to catch up with the beautiful guitarist, Liona Boyd, whom I had met several years ago in Miami.  She happened to be in Lenox, MA, where I live, for a weekend program conducted by Andrew Cohen.

Liona is a source of inspiration for my guitar playing.  I was originally introduced to her music by my brother, Norio.  I was taken by her love of the tremolo guitar style and the music sensibilities she displayed in her instrumental compositions.  Among my favorites of her original music is the tremolo piece, “Momento Eterno”, featured in the YouTube clip above. It is similar to Francisco Tarrega’s “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” (played here by Andres Segovia) but, in my opinion, is much better musically.  Other tremolo favorites of mine that she wrote are “Lullaby For My Love” and “Shadows Of The Wind.”  Listen to them if you can.

I was happy to meet Andrew Cohen again too.  We had met briefly several years ago.  At the time he was hosting Don Beck, author of the book, “Spiral Dynamics” which I had been very interested in.  Spiral Dynamics is a fascinating application of dialectics on evolving cultural values. Originally “discovered” by Clare Graves, Spiral Dynamics inspired the works of Ken Wilbur and many others.  It has been applied by Don Beck to help resolve many culturally challenging situations.  I highly recommend studying it to anyone who hopes to make a difference in the world. You can watch a two hour video on Spiral Dynamics here.

Phiya – like Bruce Gardiner mentioned a couple days ago, I really really love the tone and spirit of these posts since Day 1. I’m really excited that you’ve decided to stop consuming alcohol at 50, like you did with cigarettes at 40. As you know, I think that’s been a fundamental factor in holding your potential back these years, and now that it seems that you’re committed to moving beyond alcohol, I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures and successes lie ahead in your future.

With love and admiration, your brother….
