youareallsanpakuA fascinating aspect of macrobiotics for late and renowned “Lady Sings The Blues” author, William Dufty, was the idea of  “Sanpaku.”  In fact, it piqued his interest so much that he ended up writing a book with George Ohsawa entitled, “You Are All Sanpaku” which came out in 1965 and put macrobiotics on the map in the US.

What initially drew his attention to it (and subsequently to macrobiotics) was an article that came out on January 12th, 1964 in the New York Herald Tribune, just two months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  The article, written by then reporter, Tom Wolfe (of “Bonfire Of The Vanities” and “The Right Stuff” fame) read, “Sanpaku On Second Avenue” and began with the following paragraph:

“Abdul Karim Kassem, President Ngo Dinh Diem and President Kennedy; all sanpaku and, now, all shot to death, all destroyed by the fate of the sanpaku, which is more than a coincidence and should be an alarm signal to men and nations, say the Macrobiotics, for thus it has been demonstrated by their leader, George Ohsawa, Japanese Prophet of the Unique Principle.”

The obvious questions are: “What is ‘sanpaku’?” and can it really predict untimely premature deaths including assassinations and, if so, how?  It also leads to the larger question about destiny and whether our lives are predetermined or can change by our own free will at any given moment.

Sanpaku, meaning “three whites” in Japanese (“san”=three, “paku”=white) describes a condition of the eyes.  It specifically describes the relation of the iris to the eyeball when a person is looking straight ahead where one can see “three white” parts on the sides and below the iris.  There are three positions of the eyeball-iris relationship:

1.  Upper Sanpaku

upper-sanpakuThe whites of the eyes are visible on the sides and upper portion of the eye.  This is often found in babies eyes.  Adults with this condition may have serious mental issues.

2.  Normal Eyes

normal-eyesThe white of eyes are only visible on two sides of the iris.  This is the general normal and healthy condition for anyone from birth to old age.

3.  Sanpaku Eyes

sanpaku-eyesThe white of eyes are visible on three sides of the iris (sides and lower portion).  This is the normal at very old ages nearing natural death  (90 years or older). But is abnormal for anyone younger and indicates an extremely unhealthy condition and possible premature death.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT EYES:

Over the course of a person’s entire life from as an infant to of old age the iris naturally rises upward.   It is natural for babies to display an UPPER SANPAKU condition and it is natural for persons of very old age, nearing death, to display a SANPAKU condition.  Everyone else in between these ages should naturally have NORMAL eyes.  If a person who is not of old age displays SANPAKU eyes then that person is potentially near death.

The following are a group of SANPAKU eyes of well- known persons.  Can you identify them?:

    I did not know such things existed until i went on a google search as to why this child molestor’s eyes were so creepy. Your site, among others came up. i thought you would like to see an extreme version of San Paku. This guy is in prison for child molesting, and they just recently found a video of him raping a 7 year old. He has just been given a life sentence without parole.
    Weird connection. I am still not clear on all of the San Paku connection and destiny etc. But it is very fascinating to learn.

    Oooooo! I wanna play…PROMISE I didn’t look at part 2….#1 is Abe Lincoln, #2 is indeed JFK, #3 I have no idea.

    I REALLY don’t think #4 is Heath Ledger: he died because of spending months and months and MONTHS wearing his two main antagonistic colours according to his 9 Ki WISDOM STAR…

    #4 COULD be George Michael…

    #5 I have no idea…#6 is indeed Marilyn, and #7 is Elvis…#8 could be Stephen Seagal…

    Interesting how so many actors and performers have “bedroom eyes” (sanpaku) – from Gloria Swanson to Marilyn Monroe to Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart… Elvis, John Lennon, Heath Ledger

    And alla these murderers with sanpaku eyes… Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, Muhammed Atta, the cannibal whose name I forgot.

    This is so silly – I have had “sanpaku eyes” since I was a kid – and no one has ever tried to hurt me, let alone assassinate me! Some people just have round lower lids, or have a tendency to tilt their heads up or down when they look at people. It doesn’t make them victims or killers.

    #6 and #7 don’t look like they have the white under their eye showing. They look like they just have thicker lower inner lids. You can see where there’s some colored iris missing where their lid is covering it, unlike the rest where you see the full rounded edge of the iris in it’s entirety.
    And what’s up with those crazy-eyed people where the whites of their eyes show all the way around? Like that runaway bride who faked her own kidnapping Jennifer Burbanks or something like that? Or Ramona from Housewives of NYC?
    And aren’t supposed “sanpaku eyes” just sometimes just “bedroom eyes?” In other words, the look of someone who’s horny?

    I am an italian boy and i prefer write my comment in Italian language.:
    Complimenti Mr Kushi per il suo blog, spesso leggo i suoi articoli e li trovo molto interessanti.
    Ho letto vari libri sulla Macrobiotica e sul principio Yin e Yang.Cerco di scorgere tali principi in ogni cosa che mi accade.
    Relativamente a quest’ultimo articolo, dopo aver letto il libro “guardarsi dentro” di Michio Kushi, vorrei segnalare che in Italia il nostro ex Presidente del Consiglio Silvio Berlusconi, da tempo sembra avere gli occhi Sanpaku.In alcune foto infatti appare molto stanco ed in passato ha subito varie aggressioni.
    I finish my comment.
    My compliments for your blog.

    Sorry but;
    The second picture of FEMALE is an “manmade” female picture.. And every piece of the face was taken from “an attractive star” :) So on the picture “you called normal eyes” IS NOT EVEN REAL :)))

    And about the sanpaku eyes thing;

    There can be something about it but; I do not think it is related to death or anything else..
    As a person, educated on criminal psychology and criminal profiling; these eye types refer something FOR SURE… :o) Such as; comparing normal eyes (as you called ) people with these eyes are more aggressive and calm; what I am trying to mean is; these people keep the anger more; but the “explosion” of these people are a lot big and harmful than others.. :)

    Hope that works.. ;)

      Thank you, Erhan, for pointing out the composite image. I chose the composite image specifically because it did not depict a real person and because it did illustrate my point. The eyes chosen are for referential purposes. Readers are encouraged to explore on their own and come to their own conclusions, as you have done. I don’t think this is set in stone and your comments and observations are a welcome contribution. Many thanks.
